Persian Carpets
"Art exists so that we don't die of reality"

The carpets of Persia are truly an art form unique in scope and creativity. Although hand-made carpets are produced in many parts of the world, none can equal the Persian carpet for intricacy of design, artistry and grace. In the world of Persian carpets, the vast range of design, size, and color affords a diversity not available elsewhere.

From the geometric designs of the tribal eastern Iran to the delicate silks of the Qums, these hand made carpets delight the eye and capture the imagination.

Gabbeh
Carpets of the Qash'qai nomads of Iran were introduced to the West by the dazzling film of acclaimed Iranian Director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. These Gabbeh - the real thing, not copies, are as romantic as the film and ultra soft to the touch because the wool is homespun.   Our trips are carefully planned to  include migration seasons -we've often been lucky enough to see the huge migration caravans travelling from the high mountains to the valleys.  It's an incomparable sight!

TABRIZ
The historic City of Tabriz is located in Northwestern Iran and has been a center of carpet production for many years, reaching new heights of excellence under Saffavid rulers in the 1500’s. Tabriz carpets are made of wool and/or silk or a combination of the two, usually on a cotton foundation. The designs of Tabriz are legendary in intricacy and grace. Colors of Tabriz carpets also vary widely. The design of the Tabriz usually features a ground filled with scattered garden elements such as flowers, palmettes, foliages, etc., rather than a central medallion.
Ardabil
A tribal carpet made in Northwestern Iran, the nomads of the area have produced these fine carpets for more than 1,000 years. Contrary to the design of most nomadic carpets, Ardabils are intricately designed, often using silk as accents on the dark wool ground. The Ardabil carpet usually features a central medallion surrounded by small fish-like shapes.
These carpets reflect both Turkish and Kurdish due to the close proximity of both cultures.
Qum
Carpets produced in the holy city of Qum are considered by many the most beautiful carpets in the world. These finely knotted carpets are often silk on silk. Designs vary from floral to geometric and include the “tree of life” design as well as sporting and hunting scenes from ancient life. The Qum carpet normally features soft colors delicately balanced to produce extraordinary grace and beauty.
mashad
Located in the Northeastern corner of Iran, Mashad is ancient in the art of carpet making. Carpets of the Mashad area are usually wool on a cotton foundation, brightly colored with a central medallion surrounded by floral designs or other works of art. These carpets are very durable, giving pleasure for several lifetimes.
